It’s not every day that you get to work with an organization that has a mandate of advocating on behalf of people with mental illness. Since 2008, the Alberta Mental Health Patient Advocate has been one of my clients. Every year I facilitate a strategic retreat with staff and when we started, the first task was to create a vision and values. For several years now, I have organized and facilitated Conversation Cafes in different areas of Alberta that bring together organizations and consumers from the province’s mental health community.
Mental health and illness is a field that’s dear to me. I believe it’s an area that touches all of us either personally or through a family member, neighbour or work colleague. I am proud of the trust and faith my many clients in the mental health field have placed in me over the years.
The two people in the photo on my homepage who link to this section are Hana Marcinovik and Scott McKeen. I have worked with both Hana and Scott on behalf of the Alberta Mental Health Patient Advocate. They are two of the many mental health leaders in our province who are willing to share their life experiences with us in the hope we’ll all start to better understand mental illness and over time eliminate stigma.
